I had never seen the Drive-By Truckers before Wednesday night. I knew a bit of their music, mostly because I listen to decent radio (yes, there is such a thing - go low on the dial and avoid the Jesus stations) like WDIY, WLVR, and WXPN. It turns out, they're pretty insanely good.
I had liked everything I heard from the band, and every now and then I heard something live on the radio that sounded pretty killer, so when I saw they were coming over to Musikfest Cafe I knew I had better check them out. I put in a show request through TSI and got the show lined up.
They were damn good. My only complaint had nothing to do with the music and more with it being difficult as a photographer - the lighting was odd for Musikfest Cafe, which is usually pretty good. A lot of the night the band was backlit with no spots on the frontline at all. They sang in the dark for a good chunk of the night, or the lights would only come chest-high, leaving their heads in darkness. This may have been at the band's request, since they were drinking so much that the bright lights may have been a bother!
Anyway, there's a review coming up on TSI (written by my friend Sarah), so I'll link to that before long. In the meantime, here are some of my favorite shots from the show:
