When I shot the session of backstage portraits of members of the March Fourth Marching Band for my "B4M4 - Becoming March Fourth" project, there were a number of photos that didn't quite fit into the diptych "Before & After" shots I envisioned, but they're definitely keepers anyway. Here are a number of the "Standalone" portraits that came from that session. There's a combination of both the "before" and "after" setups in these shots.
These shots show the M4's being serious, funny, silly, fierce, and more. I couldn't ask for better subjects, and I had a great time shooting all of them.
The "before" shots were done with 2 speedlights in a Photek Softlighter ii and a speedlight in a small softbox as a rim light to camera left. The "after" shots were done with a Phottix Mitros speedlight in a beauty dish on-axis and high with a bare speedlight on either side as hard rim lights. The key light was gelled with 1 + 1/4 CTO, and white balance was set to tungsten, which gives the rim lights the blue tint. All flashes triggered with Phottix Odin triggers in manual.
